2014 Grammys Red Carpet Recap

By Erika, Resident Fashionista

The Grammys held this past Sunday sure had lots of tongues wagging – from Beyonce and Jay’s steamy set to Kendrick’s shut out, people had LOTS to say.  I, however, simply want to talk red carpet fashion.  Overall, I found myself pretty underwhelmed by the ensembles that graced the red carpet. Only a few on the red carpet made me cheer or jeer; most of them just left me noting that their outfits were “predictable,” (Taylor) “ill-fitting,” (Tamar) or “not bad but not good” (Alicia).   There were, for better or worse, five ladies who stood out on the red carpet.

For Better

Ciara in Emilio Pucci

No matter what the awards show, the real winners are baby bumps (see: Kerry Washington and Olivia Wilde at the Golden Globes)!  Ciara looked positively radiant in the stunning metallic bronze gown by Emilio Pucci.  The color and cut were both incredibly flattering and the gown showed off all the right curves – mainly that beautiful one in the front!

Beyonce in Michael Costello

Anyone who is a faithful watcher of Project Runway is no stranger to Michael Costello.  But, on Sunday night, he went from King Designer of the D-List Bravo Stars (Joanna Krupa, Lilly Ghalichi) to officially playing with the big boys!  The fact is, Michael has always designed beautiful gowns as evidenced by his run on PR and PR All Stars.  Now, he finally got the star-power to back-up his design prowess.  Equal parts sexy and sophisticated, Beyonce was a stunner!

Cyndi Lauper in Alexander McQueen

This could totally be the 80’s baby in me coming out, but I simply adored Cyndi Lauper in Alexander McQueen on the red carpet.  I think she nailed it with an outfit that was age appropriate, a little bit edgy, and totally her! The Grammys aren’t the Oscars, so it’s totally OK NOT to wear a floor length ball gown.  Cyndi killed it with the cape, slim fit pants, and massive choker.  Less is more, except when more is more!

For Worse

Fantasia Barrino

I actually do not think Fantasia’s dress is that bad.  She had the start of something really fabulous.  I mean it is hard to go wrong with a beautiful sheer and lace gown (ummm hello, Beyonce!).  But, the random red halter looks like Fantasia is rocking a bathing suit and heading to the beach, not an awards show.  And, if the skirt had been more opaque or the underskirt/dress/slip/whatever that thing is was either black or floor-length and fuller, I think it could have done wonders.  The dress isn’t completely horrible . . . it just doesn’t do anything or her.

Madonna

The fact of the matter is – I just don’t get it.  Usually, I don’t find myself all that bothered by Madge’s fashion choices – and often totally love them.  Again, this isn’t horrible; it just left me scratching my head wondering why.  And clearly I wasn’t the only one because there are memes for days comparing Madonna to all sorts of fun things – like the guy on the Oatmeal box.  I love you Madge (even though you’re Instagramming all sorts of inappropriateness) so I’ll let this slide.  I think.
